If your card is lost or stolen

  1. Call the issuer immediately. Use the customer service number from the back of the card. If you don't have the card, use the number on the packaging, your receipt, or the issuer's official website.
  2. Ask them to block the card so the remaining balance can't be spent.
  3. Provide proof: the card number (if you wrote it down or photographed it), the purchase receipt, the store, date and amount.
  4. Ask about a replacement and any fee or waiting period. Write down the reference number.
  5. If it was stolen, report it to local police too, especially if other items were taken.
Prevention is easier than recovery

When you buy or receive a card, take a photo of the front, back and receipt and store it somewhere private (not in a shared album). Register the card with your name and postal code. These two steps make a lost-card claim far more likely to succeed.

If your card is damaged

  • Numbers still readable: you may still be able to use the card online and for balance checks.
  • Chip or strip not working: the card may still work by tapping, if it supports contactless. Otherwise, contact the issuer for a replacement.
  • Numbers unreadable: call the issuer with the receipt. Don't guess digits on the balance page.

If your card has expired

An expired card stops working, but the money loaded on it generally doesn't expire. Call the issuer to ask about a replacement card or another way to access the remaining funds. See does the money expire?

What makes recovery harder

  • No receipt and no record of the card number.
  • The card was unregistered.
  • The balance was already spent before you reported it.
  • The card number and security code were shared with someone, including over the phone. See our scam guide.

Lost and stolen card questions

Can I get my money back if I lost my card?

It depends on the issuer's policy, whether the card was registered, whether you have the receipt or card number, and how much has already been spent. Report it as soon as possible to improve your chances.

I don't have the card number anymore. What can I do?

Call the issuer and explain. The receipt from the store may include details that help identify the card. Without any record, recovery is much harder.

My card is bent or the magnetic strip doesn't work.

If the numbers are still readable, you can often keep using it online. For in-store use or a replacement, contact the issuer with the card and receipt.
