Types of stores that sell them

Vanilla prepaid cards are sold from gift card displays at retailers across Canada. Stock varies by location, so availability at one branch doesn't guarantee it at another. Retailers that have been reported to carry them include:

  • Large general retailers such as Walmart, Best Buy and Giant Tiger
  • Pharmacies such as London Drugs and Jean Coutu
  • Gas stations and their convenience stores, for example Petro-Canada, Shell, Ultramar and some Esso locations
  • Convenience chains such as 7-Eleven and independent corner stores

Retailer lists change. If you're making a trip specifically for a card, call the store first. Store names are mentioned for information only; we have no relationship with any retailer.

Card values

Cards are usually sold in fixed values, typically between $25 and $250, and some displays offer a variable-load card where you choose the amount within a set range. Each has a one-time purchase fee; see fees for typical amounts.

Checklist at the counter

  1. Inspect the package before you pick it up. Reject any card with torn, re-sealed or loose packaging, or a visible card number or code. Take one from further back on the rack.
  2. Confirm the network (Visa or Mastercard) suits where you want to spend it.
  3. Watch it being scanned and make sure the card you chose is the one activated.
  4. Check the receipt for the right value and the activation.
  5. Keep the receipt with the card. If it's a gift, include the receipt or a copy.
Never buy a card because someone asked you to over the phone

No government agency, utility, bank or tech company asks to be paid in gift cards. If someone is urging you to buy cards and read out the numbers, it is a scam. Read the warning signs.

Buying questions

Can I pay for a prepaid card with a credit card?

Store policies differ. Many retailers require cash or debit for prepaid card purchases to reduce fraud. Ask at the counter.

Do I need ID to buy one?

Usually not for ordinary amounts, but a store may ask for ID for larger purchases or several cards at once.

Is there a limit to how many I can buy?

Retailers often set limits per transaction or per day. The limits vary by store.
